The 8 Personality Archetypes, Explained
Plain Big Five scores are accurate but can feel abstract. That is why our test translates your five numbers into one of eight archetypes — memorable characters that make your profile easy to understand and share, without sacrificing the science.
How the archetypes are built
Rather than using all five traits at once (which would create dozens of combinations), we focus on the three traits that most shape how you move through the world:
- Mind — driven mainly by your Openness. Are you imaginative and idea-focused, or practical and grounded?
- Energy — driven mainly by your Extraversion. Do you draw energy from the outside world or from within?
- Drive — driven mainly by your Conscientiousness. Do you push toward goals with structure, or move flexibly and spontaneously?
Each of these three can lean one of two ways, which gives 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 archetypes. Your remaining traits (Agreeableness and Neuroticism) then color your profile with warmth and tempo, adding nuance within each archetype.
You can read the full methodology on our Science page.

Why archetypes work
Archetypes give you the best of both worlds: the rigor of the Big Five and the memorability of a type. They make it easier to reflect on your strengths, share your results with friends, and see how you might relate to people with different profiles.
